ADVENTURE: Swimming with Great White Sharks: 20151110_NYT_GreatWhites_0164

Isla Guadalupe, Mexico - November 10, 2015: The ship's crew and dive masters prepare to submerge the massive steel dive cages off the aft of the Belle Amis. The ship is capable of sending down three separate cages that hold one dive master and three divers to a depth of 30-40 feet every 45 minutes. The are also two surface cages - one at 6 feet and the other at 18 feet. All are fed by compressed surface air, with divers only needing to use a rebreather and a weighted belt to hold them down as the cages submerge. (Photograph by Benjamin Lowy for The New York Times)
