EDITORIAL: AFGHANISTAN: Through my Fixer's Window
Afghanistan from the window of a rundown Toyota Corolla.
In 2008 I finished a multi-year project photographing Iraq from behind the armored windows of American Army Humvees. At the time, it was the only way to travel relatively safely. This year I found myself in Afghanistan sitting in snarling traffic, snaking all over Kabul. Road closures, checkpoints, and safety issues left me constantly driving to and from stories in my Fixer's car.
And that was certainly a unique way of seeing Kabul. Of recording some type of authentic daily life without my presence impacting too much.
But more than that, it was a peaceful bookend to a violent project I began in Iraq.
